Staatsloterij 300 Jaar

  • Visual Effects & 3D

To mark 300 years of Staatsloterij, the world’s oldest running lottery, we helped create a cinematic campaign that takes viewers on a journey through time. The film follows a young man chasing his lottery ticket across different historical periods, showing how life changes while his dream remains constant.

Brief

The goal was to create a visually cohesive film spanning three centuries of Staatsloterij history. Because the story moves through multiple time periods, every scene needed to feel historically accurate while functioning as part of one continuous chase. This meant paying close attention to environments, props, and backgrounds to make sure every detail matched its period.

Execution

Ambassadors worked on the visual effects across the film, helping bring historical environments to life, extend sets, and make transitions between eras feel natural.

In the 1872 sequence, the main character narrowly avoids a massive ship. The vessel was built in CG ahead of the shoot so it could interact naturally with the live-action footage, with scale, movement, and lighting carefully matched. In the 1911 sequence, he almost collides with an early aircraft, which was also created in CG beforehand and timed to match the actor’s performance.

The lottery ticket appears throughout the film as a key visual thread connecting the eras. The ticket was shot on green screen but was also recreated in 3D for sequences where live-action capture wasn’t possible.

As the journey moves closer to modern times, the film recreates the excitement of the 1988 European Championship celebrations. A houseboat sinks in the chaos of the festivities, the boat was physically built and filmed on set, while parts of the crowd were added in VFX to make the scene feel fuller and more alive.

“For the team, Mathijs’ script was the dream brief: a chance to fully tap into the depth of talent and experience we’ve built over the years and shape something truly distinctive together.”
